Simply put, a backlink is a link on a website that leads back to another website. The volume of backlinks leading to a website or webpage, and their quality, is usually an indication of that website or web pages’ level of popularity and/or importance to Google’s search engine ranking algorithm.

On the planet of SEO, Pagerank (PR) is at least to some extent based upon the number of websites that link to the target website.

 Therefore, it’s reasonable to state that the more backlinks you have to your website, and the higher quality those backlinks are, the greater its PR will be…which in turn ultimately drives more traffic to your site through higher search engine rankings.

In this backlink tutorial I will be discussing two kinds of backlinks, though only one has a real definition. The first, the “NoFollow” backlink, is actually a hyperlink value that tells search engines not to pass any authority or influence towards the outgoing link. It had been originally developed to assist the blogging community to limit the amount of placed links in the comments areas of a blog. Basically, it was an attempt to reduce backlink spamming by making it a less desirable target for automated blackhat software spam as well as other manipulation approaches.

Now we also have his ANGEL brother, we have the “DoFollow” backlink, which doesn’t have a genuine definition; instead this lingo is just Internet slang directed at websites or web pages NOT utilizing the NoFollow command, meaning those backlinks will get the full “link juice” (which helps ranking) on those pages.

 The more desirable DoFollow backlinks are often viewed as being the king of backlinks from the Internet Marketing community -  a lot of people go friggon crazy because they try to add countless DoFollow backlinks to their own websites as possible to boost SEO and raise PR.

Should you just have DoFollow backlinks on your sites?  What about NoFollow backlinks, could they be pointless?

1) A backlink originating from a website that is in the same niche as your website is more valuable when compared to a random backlink from a website not within your niche.

2) A backlink from a higher PR web site is more valuable compared to a backlink coming from a lower PR website.

So if we combine these two points I made with our previous NoFollow/DoFollow mix suggestion, it implies that you’d like both DoFollow and NoFollow backlinks on your sites, from high-PR sources, offering relevant content that’s within YOUR site’s niche or keywords.
